This is the fictional FRAM I, group B, Gearing Class destroyer from the book QUICKSILVER: a greyhound at sea.  It is a "west coast" destroyer since the mast tops are painted black.  "East coast FRAM destoyers were painted grey there.  The emblem on the side below the main mast is the squadron insignia: DESRON 15.

USS LARTER (DD 766) is a fictional destroyer from the book.  390 feet long, 41 feet wide, draft of 21 feet with the under the bow mounted sonar.  LARTER was originally commissioned in 1945 and served during the end of WW II, and in the Korean War.  In 1965 she underwent Fleet Rehabilitazion and Modernization and was modified extensively.  After FRAM she was equipped with sonar, AntiSubmarine Rocket (ASROC) , a Drone AntiSubmarine Helecopter (DASH) and two twin 5 inch 38 caliber gun mounts.  Initially she displaced 2250 tons but after FRAM this was increased to 3200 tons.  With two shafts, and 4 boilers she could do 34 knots.  Her primary mission: to hunt and sink submarines.

She was home to 15 officers and 263 enlisted men and served on deployment in the war zone during the fall of 1967 through the spring of 1968.
